Universal Background Checks Don’t Work, so Why Do We Want More of Them?

I’ve made mistakes before and I’ll probably make some again. That is why it’s important to be aware and skeptical as we try new ideas. There is a time for persistence and a time to ask if you’re headed in the right direction. All that came to mind as I read about the US House of Representatives proposing universal background checks for firearms owners. These background checks have failed too many times to try them again.

The fundamental failure of a background check is that it looks backward. Mass murder is not a long-term career path. Background checks do nothing to stop a first-time mass murderer. Here are the most recent examples.

• The mass murderer who killed 12 people at a country western bar in Thousand Oaks, California passed his background checks..several times.
• The mass murderer who killed 11 people in a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania synagogue passed his background checks…

This is one of those stories EVERY Armed Civilian needs to hear frequently.

The “Second Fight” for your life as an Armed Citizen is the legal battle involved proving your innocence. In this case, another person accused this man of “brandishing” a firearm at them in a public place.

In addition to what the article recommends, I would also add these tips:

• Install CCTV cameras on your home and property, especially in an area facing a public street and your front and back doors.
• Install some type of camera on your vehicle, either in a GPS unit or a stand-alone unit that records from your dash.

The reason for these tips is I know of two friends who were EXONERATED in legal self-defense encounters (not shootings, as in neither case either man fired his weapon) because of the video they provided of the encounter.

Listen guys, you buy Insurance to protect your life, home and expensive toys, right? Well Invest in Insurance for the another one of those days you hope never comes: The day you have to use your legal weapon to defend yourself!
