Junk on the Bunk: Cold Weather Clothing and Layering

Badlands Fieldcraft

Randy’s mom could teach us all a thing or two about layering..

We need to “dress for success” to be effective in extreme conditions. Our clothing choices become more important the harsher the climate and longer we intend to stay out in the bush. Since winter is upon us I’d like to share my lessons learned on cold weather clothing.

I don’t treat my clothing any different than I would any other tools; they need to be the right tool for the job to start with. I judge all my tools by how they perform and not by how they look or any other bias’. Whenever people discuss gear there always seems to be bias (caliber debates anyone?), but I really do try to avoid it as best I can. As MSG Dan Morgan said, we have to be ruthless in our gear selection.

The Coming Food Shortage

A Quick Reminder of How Venezuela RAN OUT of Food: Does This Look Familiar?

While everybody is running around like headless chickens on meth worrying about the next Civil War I have been steadily working on filling my deep freeze with venison and pork during archery deer season down here in Texas (Gun Seasons begins in November).

I strongly suggest all of you put some thought into this NOW because LATER will be too late.

Remember that scene in that movie The Road with the Cannibals?

Parents, Train Your Children Well…

Colorado boy, 8, injured in mountain lion attack describes encounter: ‘I tried to get it in the eye’

I can almost guarantee you this kid did not learn this sitting around playing Playstation all day.

Kudos to the Parents!

Teach your kids how to defend themselves against 2 and 4 legged critters alike.

Teach them how to use their hands, sticks, knives and firearms.

The Life you save maybe their own.

Also, when Mountain Lions are attacking children in their own backyard, it is time for Colorado Fish and Game to do their job and up the BAG LIMITS.

Bare Handed Mountain Lion Self-Defense

Colorado Runner Kills Mountain Lion with Bare Hands in Self-Defense

Well here’s a headline you don’t see everyday!

Two things pop out at me. Number one, this story emphasizes why you should always train with the Combative Mentality. The key word in gun fight is not gun, it’s fight. Sharpen your empty hand skills and build upon that. Empty Hand/Stick/Knife/Gun. Secondly, ALWAYS be armed! (Especially when you are in an area with an abundance of natural predators, either the four-legged kind like Mountain Lions or Bears or your garden variety two-legged thug.) The fact that a juvenile Mountain Lion attacked him and not a Full Grown one is the main reason we are not hearing about either the death or hospitalization of the jogger for life threatening injuries!
