Want to Make Schools Safer? Reduce the Number of Entrances

Texas’ own Lt. Governor Dan Patrick hit the nail on the head and proved all the internet mouth breathing “intellectuals” logic (or what Red State calls “Weapons Grade Douchebaggery”WRONG when he said this about the shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas Friday:

“From what we know, this student walked in … with a long coat and a shotgun under his coat,” said Patrick, a Republican who has an A+ rating from the National Rifle Association. “It’s 90 degrees. Had there been one single entrance possibly for every student, maybe he would have been stopped.”

You know I am just a simple country boy, but basic security principles are not that difficult to understand folks.  Especially controlling access to a building with a minimum number of entrances!

When you reduce the number of ways to get into a building, (entrances via doors) you reduce the chances of somebody being able to enter that building and kill somebody. This is Physical Security 101. Now I might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but that sounds a whole helluva lot more practical to me than making more useless gun laws for law abiding citizens or banning assault rifles altogether (which were not even used in Santa Fe).

The fact of the matter is this: The reason Liberals insist on FIXATING ON THE WEAPON used in a school shooting is because they are more concerned about political ammunition and emotional currency with voters than they are with keeping our kids safe while in school. Liberals care about one thing: Their anti-gun agenda. I don’t know about you, but as a parent I only care about keeping my Kid’s safe. To hell with politics and political agendas.

Besides, history has shown the TYPE OF WEAPON used in a school shooting is of little relevance. The Santa Fe School shooting proves this. The kid did not use an “Assault Rifle” he used a pump shotgun and a .38 Revolver! The most basic of firearms out there, And still, ten kids died.

Actually, if you pay attention to recent news, you don’t even need a firearm to do serious damage.

Consider what happened a month ago in Beijing, China when another deranged kid walked into a school with a butcher knife and stabbed nine kids to death.

Bottom line, it makes little difference HOW the kid is Armed. A determined person can do massive amounts of damage with the simplest of weapons.

What matters is how easy it is for that person to get access to the people he intends to kill.

So for all you concerned parents like me out there, here is my advice.

Start thinking practically and logically about PHYSICAL SECURITY at your kid’s school.

Look at the layout and design of the school itself. How many entrances/exits does it have? Are these doors locked (from the outside, not the inside to keep with fire code) during school hours? If not, why? Attend a school board meeting and ask specifically about physical security. If it is not already in place, propose a simple plan of “bottle necking” all visitors through the main office entrance. Sometimes, simple design changes can make a world of difference in a school. I can tell you from experience if you get other parents behind you from the start and sufficient pressure is applied, changes will happen. School officials, like all elected bureaucrats, want to be seen as being pro-active about hot button issues like school security but at the same time be seen as frugal with the taxpayers money.

More to come on this.

Stay Alert, Stay Armed, Stay Practical and Stay Dangerous!
